Riding stable

You will find our horse stable with a covered round pen and a training area in the middle of our meadow paddock which is just a three-minute walk from the Hotel Ortnerhof.

Our horses

Strong, robust & tame

A balanced and well-practised team awaits you. Our mountain-experienced leisure horses from our own breeding. A horse family with the best mix of Quarter Horse – the Western horse par excellence, compact, versatile and willing to perform – and Tyrolean Haflinger – wonderful all-rounders with a strong character, calm nerves and sensitive at the same time. With loving rearing and care, they become loyal friends and reliable partners.

The young horses spend the summer months together with cows on the alpine pastures in the Virgental valley and explore the rugged mountain trails at 2,000 metres above sea level. Doing so makes them strong, robust and sure-footed companions for your horse-powered mountain adventures.

Trail riding

Mountain fun on four hooves

Mount up and discover the unspoilt landscape while firmly in the saddle. Feel the nature. Ride through shady forests, along wild streams and across sun-drenched meadows. And then, as your gaze wanders into the distance and you only hear the gentle beat of your horse’s hooves, you feel a sense of lightness. That pure feeling of FREEDOM.

Our guided day tours are particularly popular in summer. Trail riding takes you uphill to over 2,000 metres above sea level, including a stop at a mountain hut. Varied terrain and exciting gallops are guaranteed to make your rider’s heart leap for joy.

Equestrian highlights in summer

Our guided rides are unique in Austria. With us, you explore the Tyrolean mountains on horseback. With our well-behaved, sure-footed and home-bred horses, we ride out into the breathtaking landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park region.

Horse rides

One, two or three-hour rides in a western saddle and on a loose rein. Look forward to the varied terrain and many relaxed gallops.

Training in the roundpen

One-to-one lessons for small and large riders, individually tailored to you. You will learn how to handle the horse correctly and become saddle-fast in walk, trot and canter. Also ideal for beginners or to improve your riding practice.

Alpine ride Maurertal

This tour is ideal for experienced cowgirls and cowboys who like to ride a little faster at a gallop through the forest and beside rushing streams. The rest and lunch together by the fire in our rustic “Almkuchl” at 1,450 metres above sea level is really cosy.

Bodenalm & mountain meadows

Cosy tour with campfire and sausages in a fantastic mountain setting on our mountain meadow next to the Heuschupfe. Suitable for riders who prefer to take it easy, but want to experience the adventure of riding in East Tyrol with the whole family.

Muhspanorama

With our sure-footed horses, we ride uphill along hiking trails at over 2300 metres above sea level. An adventure that is also our insider tip for cowgirls and cowboys who love riding. Breathtaking panoramic trails with fantastic views await you on this ride, where glaciers are close enough to touch. The Lasnitzen and Berger See huts are on the way.

Towards the Großvenediger

2-day tour with overnight stay at the Johannishütte.

On horseback through the Dorfertal valley up to over 2,100 metres. Unexpected expanses open up and the feeling of being a cowboy on the wide prairie overwhelms every rider. Discover the unspoilt world of the Hohe Tauern National Park region. Feel the freedom!

High alpine adventure:
Day 1:
Start at almost 1300 metres. Walk, trot and canter for approx. 15 km towards the head of the valley. Then ascent in serpentines and past rushing mountain streams and rugged rocks. Breathtaking views of the Lasörling group. Lunch at the Johannishütte, 2,121 m in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Then a leisurely exploratory ride in the terrain – at the foot of the Großvenediger. Dinner and overnight stay at the hut.

Day 1:
After breakfast at the Johannishütte, saddle up and ride into the valley. Detour into the Mauertal valley to our mountain pasture – lunch break with refreshments. This is followed by a brisk ride home along the ISEL glacier river back to the Ortnerhof.

Please note: Weight limit for riders: 90 kg. Before every high alpine adventure, a test ride with riders we do not know is MANDATORY. It takes about 10 minutes and can be done immediately before the tour (from € 10,-). Our trail rides take place from mid-June to the end of October, depending on the trail conditions. Of course, professionally guided and accompanied by our experienced trail riding guides.
